NVIDIA Unveils Isaac GR00T Reference Humanoid Robot Built on Unitree H2

NVIDIA has launched the Isaac GR00T reference humanoid robot — a complete hardware-software blueprint combining a Unitree H2 body, Sharpa dexterous hands, and a Jetson Thor compute module — paired with the Halos safety system, aiming to become the 'Android of humanoid robots.'

At GTC 2026 in San Jose on March 20, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang unveiled the Isaac GR00T reference humanoid robot — a complete hardware and software blueprint that the company hopes will become the de facto platform standard for the humanoid robotics industry, analogous to what Google's Android platform became for smartphones. The reference design combines a Unitree H2 bipedal body, newly announced Sharpa dexterous hands with 22 degrees of freedom, and NVIDIA's own Jetson Thor edge compute module running the GR00T foundation model.

The key innovation is NVIDIA's full-stack approach. The GR00T platform includes not just the reference hardware design but the complete software stack: the GR00T-1.5 vision-language-action foundation model trained on 50,000 hours of real-world manipulation data, the Isaac Sim simulation environment for synthetic data generation and reinforcement learning, the OSMO orchestration layer for distributed training, and a hardware abstraction layer that allows the same model to run on any compliant humanoid robot body — not just the reference design.

NVIDIA also announced the Halos safety system, a multi-layered runtime safety framework designed specifically for humanoid robots. Halos combines real-time perception monitoring, force/torque limiting, geofenced operation zones, a redundant hardware emergency-stop system, and an AI-powered behavioral safety layer that detects anomalous actions before they execute. The system is designed to meet emerging ISO 13482 and ANSI/RIA R15.08 safety standards for collaborative and mobile robots.

Agility Robotics was announced as the first launch partner to integrate the full GR00T stack — including Halos — into its Digit platform, with the upgraded 'Digit GR00T Edition' slated for release in Q4 2026. Other partners including Fourier Intelligence, Sanctuary AI, and 1X Technologies confirmed they are adopting components of the GR00T software stack, though not the reference hardware. NVIDIA emphasized that the platform is body-agnostic: 'We don't care whose robot you use — we care that your robot runs GR00T.'

Industry analysts view the announcement as NVIDIA's most aggressive move yet to become the foundational computing platform for the entire robotics industry, extending its dominant position in AI training infrastructure into the physical robotics deployment layer. Huang projected that by 2030, the GR00T platform would power 'the majority of the world's deployed humanoid robots,' and announced that NVIDIA's robotics-related revenue had grown 340% year-over-year, reaching $4.2 billion in fiscal 2026.
