Boston Dynamics, the pioneering robotics company known for its viral videos of humanoid and quadrupedal robots, has officially retired its iconic hydraulic Atlas humanoid robot and unveiled a fully electric successor that the company says represents a 'quantum leap' in humanoid robotics capability.

The new all-electric Atlas features a sleeker, more compact design with a 360-degree swivel head and torso, enabled by custom high-torque electric actuators developed in-house. Unlike its hydraulic predecessor — which required a tethered power supply and generated significant noise — the electric Atlas operates quietly and runs on an onboard battery pack capable of sustaining several hours of continuous operation.

Boston Dynamics engineers revealed that the electric platform reduces the robot's weight by approximately 30% compared to the hydraulic version, while simultaneously increasing its payload capacity and range of motion. The new Atlas can lift up to 25 kg with each arm and perform complex dexterous manipulation tasks that were previously impossible with hydraulic actuation.

The company has already begun pilot deployments with select manufacturing and logistics partners, focusing on material handling, palletizing, and assembly-line support tasks. Commercial availability is expected in late 2025, with pricing to be announced closer to launch.
